Celebrate National Garlic Day with Tzatziki sauce

April 18, 2019

I am ecstatic because today is National Garlic Day and there are few foods I can rave about as much as garlic! It is one of the healthiest foods on earth. Did you know that the father of Western medicine, Hippocrates, used to prescribe garlic to help heal many health ailments? Here are a few health benefits of garlic:

  • It’s a natural anti-viral and antibacterial

If you want to keep colds and the flu away, eat tons and tons of garlic! In fact a recent study found that people given a garlic supplement were 63 percent less likely to get the common cold than study participants who were given a placebo. Garlic keeps your immune system super strong!

  • Garlic can improve cholesterol levels, lowering your risk of Heart Disease

Recent research has found that garlic appears to lower LDL and Total cholesterol, which can reduce your risk of heart disease.

  • Garlic is a natural detoxifier

The sulfur compounds in garlic are naturally detoxifiers. In fact, I read an amazing study where people who worked in a battery plant were given garlic supplements for four weeks and it reduced lead levels in their blood by almost 20 percent! And the employees also had fewer headaches!

Those are just three amazing benefits of garlic and there are dozens more.

Tzatziki sauce is one of my favorite ways to get in healthy dosages of garlic. It’s super easy to make and so versatile. I use it as a salad dressing or drizzle it over turkey burgers, veggies burgers or grilled chicken! It can even be used as a veggie dip! I’d be lying if I told you I never sat down and ate a bowl of it by itself when I was craving something refreshing!

Here’s the recipe:

Tzatziki Sauce

  • one 8-12-inch cucumber peeled and diced in small pieces
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 16 ounces of plain Greek yogurt
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt

Process all  the ingredients in a food processor for 30 seconds and that is all! Voila, you have Tzatziki sauce!
