Food recommendations for oral health

October 24, 2019

It’s National Oral Hygiene Month! When it comes to oral health, good nutrition is critical. It is the first place that food touches, and the first place where proper digestion starts. And when we don’t take good care of our oral health, this can lead to weakened enamel, causing heat and cold intolerance and even pain. An unhealthy mouth, especially gum disease can even increase our risk of heart disease and other serious health ailments.

So, how can you make sure that you are not only enjoying your food, but also, ensuring that your body is getting nutrients delivered to it properly?

By taking great care of your oral health!

We all know that cavities feed on sugars, and highly acidic foods can wear down the protective enamel on your teeth. But did you know that there are certain foods that are really good for your dental hygiene?

  1. Calcium-rich foods are great for your bones AND your teeth! Look for good calcium sources like quality dairy or dairy alternatives like soy milk and tofu.
  2. Phosphorus is another mineral that is great for your teeth! Phosphorus can be found in meat, eggs, and fish.
  3. Grab some crunchy fruits and vegetables. That’s right, crunch on those carrot sticks and apples. The chewing process can help break down some of the plaque buildup on your teeth!
  4. Water! You know you need to drink at least 8 cups a day. But this is critical to keeping the pH in your mouth neutral and washing away unwanted bacteria.
  5. Vitamin-C rich foods like broccoli, oranges, tomatoes, and peppers are important for good gum health.

And as always, remember to visit your dentist regularly and create a daily brushing and flossing routine!
