Staying hygienic in the summer months is more difficult than any other time of the year. The increasing temperatures lead to sweat, oil, and dirt building up rapidly. I have some tips to share for staying fresh and clean from the outside – in.
Hydration: Drinking plenty of fluids will result in “cleaner” sweat. This is also better for your skincare overall. Consume foods with high water content (like watermelon and cucumbers) as well to keep hydration optimal. Sunburns cause drying of the skin leading to dead skin to build up. Exfoliating and hydrating will reduce this problem.
Clothing: Wear light-weight loose clothes. Breathable fabrics do not trap moisture in and allows the skin to breathe.
Wash hair regularly: In the summer it is important to start washing your hair more than normal. Sweat and oils build up faster and need to be removed to prevent build up. Many people choose to keep their hair shorter in the summer to prevent the hassle. A temporary yet quick fix for excess hair oils is spraying some dry shampoo on areas of the scalp that produce more oils.
Keep unscented wipes around: These wipes are safe and can be used all over your body. These will remove sweat and dirt as it arrives to prevent build up and odor. This is helpful for those struggling with acne and heat rashes.
Take showers regularly: Do this to remove any dirt, sweat, and bacteria that has built up from being hot and outside. Also, taking cool/cold showers can lower overall body temperature when you are overheated.
Washing your hands repeatedly: This is crucial, especially after being outside, for hygiene and overall health.
Taking care of what is going on outside your body as well as inside is important.
Practice food hygiene: Fresh produce is especially delicious in the summer, but it can also be responsible for carrying a lot of bacteria. Refrigerating perishable foods quickly will prevent them from causing foodborne illness. With the hot temperatures outside, food should not be left out for a long time. Food should be properly soaked, rinsed, and cleaned with cool water and baking soda or vinegar.
With these tips it will be easier to remain hygienic and to have a clean and fresh summer!
